Welcome to Digital Village

Digital Village is a non-profit community organization with the objective of building a next generation carrier class data network across the Garden Route region. This is to provide high quality wireless internet to the region so as to be a powerful social and business enabling medium.

Digital Village has as a key focus the objective of providing high quality broadband internet free of charge to community organizations. In particular, this would include schools and other approved community organizations such as clinics, libraries, old age homes, etc.

In the case of schools, the focus is especially on connecting neglected rural schools or in low income environments where data and phone services are either entirely not available or of a slow and poor standard.

The Digital Village model requires the partnership of a commercial entity to provide last mile connectivity to business and private users in a way that is beyond the scope of a non-profit organization to provide.

The two models are required in the form of a public-private partnership for the purpose of cross-subsidizing key cost elements in the business model. In particular, Digital Village provides backbone infrastructure while the commercial entity provides back office and management infrastructure as well as last mile business solutions that are needed to offset costs of running a community service.
